Limiting Beliefs In Life and Work

December 02, 20242 min read

Hey there! Today, I thought we could dive into finding passion in our work—and tackling those nagging little doubts that pop up, you know, the ones that say, “Are you sure you’re cut out for this?” Whether you’re working a nine-to-five, freelancing, or managing a household, we all hit those moments where we wonder, “Am I in the right place? Do I really have what it takes?”. Maybe if you are like me, I am a stay at home mom of a special needs child and I will never get to have a job outside of this"

What Are Limiting Beliefs?

So, first off, let’s talk about what I mean by “limiting beliefs.” These are the thoughts that convince us we can’t succeed. They sound like:

  • “I’m not qualified enough.”

  • “No one’s going to value what I bring.”

Next time you hear that inner critic, stop and ask yourself, “Is this true, or is this just an old story?” It’s a simple way to call out these beliefs for what they are—just thoughts, not facts.

Flip the Script

Once you’ve recognized a limiting belief, try flipping it. Instead of thinking, “I don’t have enough experience,” reframe it as, “Every project I take on is building my experience.” Or if you’re thinking, “People won’t care about my work,” swap it with, “The right people will value what I bring.”

When we start rewriting these beliefs, we give ourselves room to take those next steps—and that’s where growth really happens.

Mixing Passion and Purpose

Now, there’s this idea out there that you should be “doing what you love” every single day, but passion doesn’t mean you’re going to feel excited 24/7. Passion is more about finding that spark, even in small ways. Purpose, though, that’s what really keeps us going. So, even if you’re not in your dream job or ideal role right now, think about ways to bring in things that excite you—whether that’s new projects, learning something new, or connecting with people who inspire you.

You can change your life

And finally, remember that your journey is your own. Limiting beliefs often come up when we start comparing ourselves to others. The truth is, no one else has walked your exact path. Embrace where you’re at, and take things one step at a time. Those small, steady moves really add up.
