Block Scheduling

November 18, 20242 min read

Hey there, Ashley here! Let’s dive into routines and block scheduling—tools that can help us get through the daily hustle with a little more ease. Especially as a mom of seven and a special needs parent, I’ve found ways to simplify routines to keep things manageable and flexible. Maybe one of these can work for you too!

Visual Schedules for Young Children

Ever noticed how some kids thrive with more structure, especially if they need help transitioning from one task to the next? Visual schedules are game-changers. I use one with my child, who has autism, and it’s super straightforward: a picture for each activity alongside a label. It’s reusable too—just laminate it, add some Velcro, and rearrange as needed. If this sounds helpful, I’ve linked to a free version here!

The Power of Block Scheduling

Block scheduling is something you might remember from school: long chunks of time dedicated to specific tasks. I use a similar approach at home with broader time blocks, like “morning routines,” “errands,” or “evening family time.” This way, each block stays consistent while allowing flexibility within that time. Toddlers and preschoolers, in particular, can find security in these familiar patterns, helping everyone stay on track without feeling overloaded.

Planning with a Purpose (And Some Flexibility)

When life’s moving fast, keeping organized can feel impossible. I use a mix of digital and paper planning to track what’s needed for the week. With a simple notes app, I jot down tasks for each day and adjust as life demands—because we all know parenthood rarely sticks to the plan! I also have bigger-picture goals broken down by month and even seasonally, so I can focus on what’s most important.

Finding What Works for You

Routines aren’t about achieving perfection; they’re about giving you breathing room. It’s taken me years to figure out a system that feels right, and it’s still evolving. The best thing you can do is experiment, be flexible, and keep things simple. And remember—progress is progress, even if it’s just inch by inch!
